KMDF is piloting an approach of Community Philanthropy in Kabale Municipality.  The pilot project is supported by Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF), Freedom Radio 94.7FM, Freedom Institute for Law and ICT Studies (FILIS and DFCU Bank, Kabale Branch.

As part of this pilot project, on July 5th, 2018, KMDF organized a Community meeting on Local Giving in Kabale Municipality to collect data on why people give, where they want to give, for those who don’t want to give why and find out.  The meeting also aimed at understanding what guarantees people would need from KMDF in order to give.  The meeting was attended by 60 Village focal persons from 60 villages of Kabale Municipality.  Using the materials like banners that have been developed to raise awareness on local giving, KMDF team explained the concept of Community Philanthropy. During discussions, participants, shared with KMDF and with each other how they have been giving to churches, schools, and others. From the discussions, participants agreed that though they have been giving, giving for Community Development is not yet appreciated as a key ingredient of social change in Kabale Municipality

If you are a resident of Kabale Municipality and would like to be part of the research, fill in this questionnaire here and send it to back to KMDF at the following address This email address is being protected from spambots. The funding from Global Fund for Community Foundations will be used to Pilot Community Philanthropy approach and build up a local donor base for Kabale Municipality Development Foundation (KMDF). Kabale Municipality Development Foundation (KMDF) was created in 2010 as a Community Foundation with an aim of working to address the Challenges that face the urban poor living in 74 villages of Kabale Municipality, South Western Uganda. KMDF was established with the major aim of addressing the escalating poverty levels among the urban poor in Kabale Municipality. The Vision of KMDF is having a peaceful, just, developed and well Governed Society with Prosperous and Happy people.

With this project, KMDF has started a journey that will see the Foundation building Local Assets, Capacity, and Trust. This approach is very important because it will promote local ownership of the asset and increasing local ownership and local accountability leads to stronger communities. This approach is being adopted because it works at the grassroots level by looking at local assets – financial and otherwise – and by building capacity and trust for addressing community needs and priorities

The Global Fund for Community Foundations (GFCF) is a grassroots Grantmaker working to promote and support institutions of community philanthropy around the world. GFCF is working with individual community foundations and other local Grantmakers and their networks around the world, with a particular focus on the global south and the emerging economies of Central and Eastern Europe. Through small grants, technical support and networking, GFCF helps these local institutions to strengthen and grow so that they can fulfill their potential as vehicles for local development and as part of the infrastructure for sustainable development, poverty alleviation, and citizen participation.
